When do taxes start incurring penalties and can the penalties be waived?

If you pay your first half or second half property tax after the due date, a penalty will be added to your taxes. The later you pay, the greater the penalty. Also, additional interest is charged once the payment remains past due on January 2nd of the following year. See the back of the tax statement for the penalty schedule and more information. Penalties and interest rates are set by state statute.
