- Call the Cass County Sheriff's Office at 218-547-1424 and request that an alarm permit be mailed to you or download an Alarm Permit Application (DOC).
- Permits are good for one year (September 1 through August 31).
- Renewal applications are mailed out in the first week of September for the following year.
- There is a $20 alarm user fee per year.
- Alarm System False Alarm:
- Two free false alarms per year
- The third false alarm is $25
- Subsequent false alarms increase in increments of $25 (i.e., $50 for the fourth, $75 for the fifth, $100 for the sixth, etc.)

- A permit can be picked up at the Sheriff's Office or downloaded the Permit to Carry Application (PDF). The information cover sheet (PDF) can also be downloaded.
- We are not accepting permit to carry applications by mail. This applies to new permits and renewals. You must apply in person with picture ID. Hours that permits are accepted are 8 am to 4:30 pm in the Law Enforcement Center lobby.
- Carry permits are good for five years and cost $100.
- A permit to carry certification course is required for the carry permit. For locations of training courses, please contact the sheriff's office.
- A permit will be processed within a week from the time you make the application. A criminal history is run on each application. A conviction for certain crimes can be cause for denial of a permit. In order to receive a permit to carry, you must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm.
- Renewals: $75 for a five year renewal. You may renew your carry permit up to 90 days prior or 30 days after the expiration date on your permit. Please note, you may notrenew earlier than 90 days prior or later than 30 days after. If an application is received after the 30 day window, it will be considered a new permit, and a fee of $100 will be required. To renew your carry permit, you will need the following:
- Copy of your concealed carry training certificate. This training must be within the past 12 calendar months, of permit renewal application date. Ensure you understand this, this is very important.
- Copy of your driver's license.
- Copy of your current concealed carry permit.
- Check/money order/cash for $75
- Completed carry renewal permit application.
- Once the renewal process is complete, your carry permit will be valid for another five years.
- Online training will be accepted under the following conditions:
- The virtual classroom is certified by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
- The practical on-hands range training is certified by the Minnesota BCA

- A purchase permit can be picked up at the Sheriff's Office or downloaded the Gun Purchase Permit (PDF). Purchase permits cost nothing, require no photo and the certification course is not required.

- Raft Permit Application (PDF): $10 for 2 years - Use the Online Raft Form
- Fishing Tournaments or Water Event Permits (PDF): $20 per event. Includes; Snowmobile radar runs or snowmobile races, winter events on the lake surface/ice, fishing tournament, etc. $20 per event - Use the Online Event Form
- The Hold Harmless Agreement needs to be notarized and signed for each event application.

- Enforcement of the law in a democratic society is a complex task. The ability of a peace officer to render effective service responsive to the public's need depends heavily upon job knowledge and skills.
- The Minnesota Sheriffs' Association recognizes the importance of pre-entry training to the accomplishment of these requisites. It also recognizes that some candidates need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, as well as, those candidates who excel academically.
