Birth, Death & Marriage Records
General
- You may request a birth, death, or marriage record by mail, fax, or email.
- Birth and Death certificate applications must be signed in front of a notary.
- You may mail a check to our office or pay electronically by calling our office for instructions.
Birth Certificate
You can obtain a certificate only if you have tangible interest. If someone without tangible interest comes in to pick up a certified birth certificate, this form must be filled out before our office staff can issue the birth certificate, Letter of Permission (PDF).
Complete (except for signatures) the Birth Certificate Application (PDF) and bring it in to our office with either cash or check of the following fees that would apply:
- Certified copy: $26.00
- Additional certified copy $19.00
- Uncertified copy: $13.00
Death Certificate
Death certificates can typically be used to obtain death benefits, claim insurance proceeds, or to notify social security. You can obtain a certificate only if you have tangible interest.
Complete (except for signatures) the Death Certificate Application (PDF) and bring it in to our office with either cash or check of the following fees that would apply:
- Certified copy: $13.00
- Additional certified copy $6.00
- Uncertified copy: $13.00
Marriage Certificate
If you misplace your marriage certificate and choose to purchase a certified copy, you must apply for one at the county in which the license was issued for a fee of $9.00. If you are not sure where the license was issued, you may go to the MOMS index® website which identifies which county in Minnesota is the official custodian of the record. If you are applying in Cass County, you may visit in person or send a check or money order payable to the Cass County Auditor-Treasurer in the amount of $9.00 per record and a note with both applicants' names prior to marriage, date of marriage, and where you would like the certificate mailed. Mail these to:

Generally, Cass County records begin around the 1900's. Some earlier records are available, but not all records were filed with the county for recording. The State of Minnesota is also the repository of some records over the decades, spanning the years as noted.
